The Murphy Family Reunion took place in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina on Sunday, August 5th, 2017.  The reunion is now held on the first Sunday in August of each year for the family and friends of Lee and Azalea Murphy near Murphy, North Carolina.  Some eighty family members gathered at Bear Paw Resort for the event, this year.

      Oliver Leander Murphy was born on Sunday, July 19, 1895 in Birdtown, NC.  He was 1/8th Native American of the Cherokee tribe.  Lee married Azalea Hampton on Sunday, February 10, 1918 at Bates General Store in Unaka, NC.  She was born on Tuesday, August 2, 1904 in Cherokee County, NC.  Lee worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) during the 1930's and 40's.

     Azalea poses with all her living children in 1988.  Hollis, the eldest child, was born on Tuesday, March 1, 1921.  She died four months prior to the 1988 Reunion.  Dale, is the second child, followed by Archie, Zada, and Margie.  Archie died from diphtheria, around the fall of 1930, a common childhood disease at the time.  Ella was born the next year, followed by Garland, who died at the very young age of three weeks.  Lawson, the youngest, was born the following year.
